In the developing health conscious society, nutritional supplements have a transcending presence in American lives. Made for more than just nutrient deficient populations, supplements have expanded into various aspects of society like sports nutrition. Although they are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, many claims made in regard to supplements advertise beneficial and almost magical consequences. However, supplements come at a cost, and one might wonder whether or not there are better solutions on the market. As malnutrition is a very real issue for even well-off Americans, supplements seem to fill these nutritional fractures in many cases. Are supplements the cornerstone solution of a square diet? Although ketoacidosis is not a life threatening condition, it may be inconvenient for those who do not realize they are in this metabolic state. Ketoacidosis can leave people with what seems like unexplainable exhaustion and weight gain. Ketone bodies can lower the pH of the body, tripping it into a dangerously acidic state. To counteract this, the kidneys filter ketone bodies through the digestive system. However, this filtration is what causes the human body to become dehydrated (Etcheverry 12). Hydration, especially for active athletes, is paramount. If one is consuming copious amounts of protein, it is imperative that he or she pairs four grams of water per gram of protein ingested. Another unwanted symptom of ketoacidosis is bad breath, which goes hand in hand in hand with dehydration . On the other hand, sipping on an adequate amount of water throughout the day is a wonderful foundation for physical fitness. By proxy, the more protein a diet consists of, the more amount of water one would want to drink. As long as one does not reach a hypertonic state because of an excessive amount of water, drinking more water is considered a positive aspect to health. Given that one is not diligent about their eating habits, supplements are necessary if one has a goal of becoming healthy. For athletes trying to obtain specific objectives, supplements are needed more often than not. Without them, executing ambitions may take an extended period of time, or may not even be attainable at all. Furthermore, supplements give diet restricted individuals, like vegetarians, a wider and less expensive variety of protein sources.
