An unhealthy diet can be a contributing factor for overall poor health In fact, it can even lead to numerous enduring illnesses, such as heart disease, obesity, and diabetes. I t is recommended that individuals follow healthy diets that consist of health food choices such as fruits and vegetables. 1and2
Nutrition and Its Social Determinants While the practice of proper nutrition and good diet is considered vital to good health, there are several social determinants that can also affect good nutrition.1and 2 Socioeconomic status (SES) is one of those determinants, and includes a person’s education, income and occupation. 1 People of higher socioeconomic rank are more likely to practice good nutrition because they are generally …show more content…
2 This can include improving local community service and community organizations that already exist, and developing new programs to tackle social determinants 2 and improve people’s nutrition. More or improved community programs that concentrate on individuals who are the most affected by poor diet can create a significant improvement in the overall number of people practicing good nutrition. Another way that public health can speak to social determinants is through awareness. 2 Public health professionals can increase awareness by identifying and focusing on those who are influenced the most by poor nutrition, such as individuals with low SES and those living in remote locations or in neighborhoods lacking healthy food markets, and informing them about the negatives of poor diet like chronic illnesses and the positives like better overall health. 1and2 A final way in which public health can address social determinants is through continued research that helps to ascertain assorted social determinants so we can further understand them and develop policies and programs.
