I. Meal Plan Menu Summary
I am 68 inches tall and weigh 151 pounds, with a BMI of 23.0. All information entered into the program was based off my true numbers. Based on my profile, NutriCalc Plus calculated my nutrition goals for some nutrients as follows: 2553.40 (calories), 54.79g (protein) and 300mg (cholesterol). On a daily basis I try to consume more nutrient dense foods rather than consuming foods with empty calories. During a normal day I run around a lot between school and attending to my child. So, when out on the road I often pack healthy snacks for my son and me. Some snacks include; unsalted nuts, water, sugar-free jello, and fruit. Lastly, I cook for my family on a daily basis and I try to make sure I am using ingredients that

My goal for protein was to decrease my intake to 60 grams and to decrease my cholesterol to 300 milligrams. I specifically chose to cut back on cholesterol and protein because they pose a health risk for me based on my family history. Additionally, protein at times goes along with cholesterol and if I wanted to cut down on my intake of one, I would need to cut down on the other. Cholesterol when eating in moderation contributes to healthy cell function by maintaining the membrane of the cell and synthesizing compounds like estrogen and testosterone. In addition, LDLs (bad cholesterol) are taken up by endocytosis and broken down into protein. But, when cholesterol intake goes over 300 milligrams it will increase LDL levels and this can lead to atherosclerosis (Byrd-Bredbenner, 2003). My protein intake was over the daily recommendation intake by 34.18 grams (NutriCalc Plus Online, n.d.). Protein when eating in moderation is a main component for the lipoprotein, HDL, which is the good cholesterol that helps to remove LDL’s from the blood (Byrd-Bredbenner, 2003). When protein intake is excessive it can lead to diseases like colon cancer. Also, it can cause calcium levels to decrease and can lead to a vitamin D deficiency (Byrd-Bredbenner, …show more content…
Due to the body’s ability to produce its own cholesterol, I will not risk my health by taking in too many foods with cholesterol. I want to keep my cholesterol at a level where my HDL’s have the chance to clear out any LDL’s and to keep my arteries unclogged (Byrd-Bredbenner, 2003). However, with protein I don’t mind going over my daily value, I just need to make sure the foods that I eat are good sources of protein. I believe that I will be able to sustain these changes, because it is important to live a healthy life for me to be able to support and care for my family. Also, I want to make sure in my quest to stay within my cholesterol and protein goals that I am still getting all my nutrients needed to live a healthy lifestyle. I will continue to use a nutrient tracker, Myfitnesspal, daily to keep on track and will take vitamins. Lastly, this project and class has taught me so much about how to track nutrients and which foods that will provide me with these nutrients. I will be able to use these lessons for the rest of my life and teach
