The Dietary Managers Association offers certifications as Certified Dietary Manager (CDM) and Certified Food Protection Professional (CFPP.) After obtaining the certification, the CDM and CFPP must earn 45 continuing education credits every three years to maintain the certification. Due to the importance of Dietary Managers in the foodservice operations, they usually work more than 40 hours during a workweek, and expect to work on weekends and be on-call most of the time. Nutrition is a growing science that involves more than knowing about food. Dietary Managers implement mathematics, accounting and business knowledge everyday. I think that it is important to research more about the different job positions offered in the nutrition department to find the right career for you. Two years ago when I started my degree in nutrition, I wasn’t sure about what I really wanted to do. I have a passion about nutrition and helping others, and I thought that Dietetics was the only option I had. However, for one reason or another, it was very difficult for me to seek to become a Registered Dietitian. Now, I know that there are many other jobs I can perform where I can show my knowledge and willingness to help others while doing something I love. I also believe in the importance of researching the requirements needed for a specific job position, such as certifications, training and continuing education, the skills needed and also the advantages offered, including salary and health benefits, to know what to expect in the long run. Something I am truly sure about is that to work in the foodservice industry, you have to be passionate about what you do and to have the capacity to understand the necessities of your patients and customers.
