With the abundance of information available to the public, deciphering between the legitimate and false material is critical to developing a truthful perspective. This means that every source requires investigation- even for knowledgeable professionals. This is the case in every field; however, in regard to healthcare, not only is it essential for quality improvement to ask the correct questions and conduct the right studies, but it is imperative to appropriately interpret and analyze information that is published. A particular study to consider was conducted in 2008: What Do Resident Physicians Know about Nutrition? An Evaluation of Attitudes, Self-Perceived Proficiency and Knowledge. The authors (Vetter, Herring, Sood, Shah, Kalet) studied …show more content…
The authors used, “previously validated questionnaires,” the study found that the majority of the resident physicians believed that nutrition was an important aspect of health care: all but 6% believed nutrition consoling was their responsibility, and 77% believed a nutrition assessment was necessary in usual primary care appointments. With this in mind, not even a fifth of them believed that they were prepared to fully assist their patients in this field (Vetter et al. 2008). When assessed for knowledge with a multiple choice test from a nutrition text book, the average score was 66%- thus the authors concluded, “Internal medicine interns’ perceive nutrition counseling as a priority, but lack the confidence and knowledge to effectively provide adequate nutrition education.” (Vetter et al. 2008). With this information, the authors then analyze the data, discuss connections with correlating studies, and examine the methods of the study itself. The average correct score on the knowledge quiz was 66%. Mean knowledge scores for individual topics are provided in Table 2. Knowledge was particularly lacking in the areas of nutrition assessment and obesity, endocrine disease, and cardiovascular nutrition. For example, only half (54%) knew the correct answer to the question “How many calories are in a gram of protein?” (Vetter et al. 2008)
All of the data is openly presented in tables and other representations also. For example, in the quote above, additional information on the statistic is referenced to Table 2. The authors fully submit every detail of the study. The status and number of participants is given, the results are clearly presented in tables, and the statistics software used is even specified. Furthermore, the origin of the survey and knowledge test is provided along with their validation, when and how they were administered, and the questions themselves. This transparency validates that the information is truthfully given.
