I had a rough start when I started high school with few friends. Each day coming to school was dissatisfying and I felt pressured to do well for the sake of my future. Rarely left my house for anything outside of going to school. I lacked motivation and clear goals to achieve.
Eventually as I realized my physical ineptitude, I made the decision to start going to the gym in order to build my self-esteem and feel well physically. I set a plan for myself to work twice a week: once on upper body, another on the lower body because achieving a goal requires planning as well as patience.
After a few weeks of working out bi-weekly, I saw those that were bigger than me as not those that were better than me, but a model of what I could be. Yet I didn't make enemies out of those, since when you got a lot of enemies, there will be a lot of people trying to drain your energy and people that distract you from achieving your real goals. I instead made friends out of those who had similar goals to me.
In fact, one of my closest friends came from my experience at the gym, someone who worked to achieve his goals in school sports, someone who wanted to get off of the bench of the football team and working his way up like myself. In school, I was less than great at cooperating in team efforts because I rarely knew what it felt like to achieve something I wanted.
