Based on the super tracker’s nutrient report analysis, I’ve managed to get my average intake of nutrients for the time period varying from 02/17 to 02/19. My target calorie intake is 2000 calories; however, my intake was below the target amount(1613 calories). Therefore, it’s imperative for me to reach my daily calorie intake in order to receive the full amount of nutrients my body needs to properly function on a day to day basis. On the other hand, the report shows normal levels of protein(63g), added sugars(40g), carbohydrate(174 g),linoleic Acid (7% Calories), and cholesterol(153 mg). Yet, not all of my nutrient needs were met. Nutrients such as carbohydrates(%in calories), dietary fiber, linoleic acid (g), α-linolenic acid (% calories), and α-Linolenic Acid (g) all fell below my daily intake. As for the remaining nutrients, such as omega 3-DHA, omega 3-EPA, monounsaturated fat, polyunsaturated fat, and total sugars required no daily target or limit. But, regardless of the nutrient deficiency in certain areas; my mineral levels were varied. Controlling your portions, yourself, and your wallet truly are effective steps towards building a healthy lifestyle of your choice. What is neat about this food philosophy is that you work to reach your goal at your own paste, at your own time, and for your own reasons. Michael Pollen, Mary Maxfield, and many others will continue to share what they believe is effective, but what suits one person is not the same for somebody else. Consequently, each person needs to initiate a starting point, experiment, and figure out what works for them. This is why this essay’s philosophy is very vague and flexible.…

Health and nutrition, particularly my own, is something I have taken special interest in lately as I’ve come to realize I’m rapidly approaching the second half of my life and want it to be as good as, or even better than, the first half. If I were to be asked eight weeks ago if I was a healthy person, my answer would be a resounding, “Yes;” my regular physicals and blood work confirming my response. And while I still believe that to be true, what an eye opener the Diet Analysis project was, as far as understanding my actual nutritional intake in comparison to the Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) of nutrients recommended for optimal health and well-being. The following paragraphs not only detail the Diet Analysis PLUS program used for this project,…

Nutrient profiling is the science of classifying or ranking foods according to their nutritional composition for reasons related to preventing disease and promoting health. For instance, nutrient profiling can be used to generate criteria for descriptions of foods falling into two main types: • descriptions that refer to the nutrient levels in foods e.g. ‘high fat’, ‘low fat’, ‘reduced fat’, ‘source of fibre’, ‘high in fat, sugar or salt’, ‘energy dense, nutrient poor’; or • descriptions that refer directly to the effects of consuming the food on a person’s health e.g. ‘healthy’, ‘healthier option’, ‘less healthy’, ‘good for you’. Though nutrient profiling does not address all aspects of nutrition, diet and health it is a helpful tool to use…

Finally, I learned that I exceeded the daily recommended allowance for sodium (252% RDA and 212% RDA respectively), while I fell short in my consumption of the mineral potassium (82% and 98% respectively). Unfortunately, my multivitamin does not provide potassium and with my allergy to bananas makes it difficult to increase my potassium intake. I realize that meeting the requirements for salt and potassium are unhealthy. Excess sodium can lead to heart disease, and hypertension, while low potassium can lead to muscle cramps, constipation, and a decreased ability to train effectively. Although my chart indicates a lack of folic acid, my multivitamin provides 100%RDA, thus it is not a concern.…
