The loss of Margaret has caused Elaine to disconnect with the world around her both socially and faithfully. (SIP-A) Elaine began to pull away from her friends and other people around her. (STEWE-1) Since Margaret died, Elaine is alone and she needs to learn how to make her own friends. Her mother even told her that “Margaret is gone and that she would have to learn to do things with other people” (54). But Elaine ignored her mother and “continued to long for her sister, so she spent many nights alone with her Grandfather’s telescope watching the stars” (Staples 54). This shows that Elaine is really missing her sister and feels like she is all alone. (STEWE-2) Elaine’s mother is getting involved and she “tried to talk to her about making friends” (Staples 53). Elaine is too upset to make an effort to make any friends and she is clearly not connected to her own social life. (SIP-B) Once Margaret died, she also disconnected with her own faith. (STEWE-1) To Elaine, her faith is very important to her and now that her sister has died so suddenly she feels as if she can't even trust her own God. “After her sister’s death Elaine began a quest for meaning. She could not accept that the God of her childhood took her little sister” (Staples 134). Now Elaine needs to find a new faith or religion. (STEWE-2) Elaine also began to question her God and was wondering why her God decided that it was time for her sister to die. (BS-3) Nusrat was left to empathize for her parents once she knew that Faiz was not going to be coming back. (BS-2) Also, even though Faiz had helped Elaine to reconnect to the world again, Nusrat’s parents still did not agree with the conversion. (BS-1) Margaret’s death impacted Elaine so much that she didn’t want to speak to anyone and she was no longer connected to her religion. (R) In the end, everything turned out to be okay for Nusrat, but it is sad to think how her life will never be the
