Researchers in human behavior study how it affects whom we are, how we act, and asks how we get that behavior. Could this be passed on through our ancestors, our mom, or our dad? Can we change our ways in how we live life? Do we become the way we are just because we inherit the behavior or is it our surroundings? “Fences” tells the story of a Black family who are living in a rough situation. The question is if their behavior is more connected with nature or nurture. In the story “Fences” written by August Wilson, the argument for nurture can focus on one specific character named Cory. Cory is more influenced by nurture because he doesn’t want to follow in his father’s footsteps, but his character shows a combination of nature and nurture.

Cory changed his way; he got to a point where he was acting like his dad by fist fighting each other. Cory tells Troy “You ain’t never gave me nothing! You ani’t never done nothing but hold me back. Afraid I was going to be better than you. Put me out I ain’t afraid of you!” (Act two Scene four) this part of the story tells how nature wins over nurture. Years after, when Troy has died due to a heart attack, Cory is now in the marines something that Troy could never be because he worked picking up garbage. Cory being in the marines makes the reader think that he is going to have a better life and a good job all thanks to his mother Rose. Rose told Cory at the Day of the funeral that “Cory that shadow wasn’t nothing but you growing into yourself you either got to grow Into it or cut it down to fit you”. Telling Cory that everyone has a choice weather if you follow your dads, your mom’s, or you own path. In conclusion could behavior be passed on through our ancestors, our mom, or our dad?
