I would consider myself an underrepresented minority in the field of nursing because I am a Black male. First off, in 2011, 9 percent of all nurses were men, while 91 percent were women. In 2013 nurses from minority backgrounds represented 19 percent of the registered nurse workforce. African Americans made up only 6 percent of the minority population.
