Three types of theories that guide us in nursing include Grand Theories, Middle Range Theories and Practice Theories. Grand Theories are referred to as “macrotheory” by some. While Middle Range theories are a range of nursing models which include more concrete and solid ideas, and can be tested. Practice Theories are know for their tailoring ability and how specific they are in healthcare and for the care of the patient. (McEven and Wills)
Grand Nursing Theories are the broadest, and based on a total holistic approach. These types of theories provides a conceptual framework under which use key concepts and principles. Middle Range where originally proposed, “in the field of sociology in the 1960s” (McEwen and Wills). They “fill in the gaps” and allow us to be more precise. They covers such concepts such as pain management, cultural issues and health promotion. For unique nursing issues such as pain, cultural issues, health promotion and symptom management, these theories do not give you the answer, but more so point you in the direction you need to consider to for that particular subject. Middle Range narrow our insight and Practice Theories even more, these are the most specific. Nursing Theories are a useful tool for nursing practice. Grand Nursing Theories have always provided a strong foundation for Middle Range and Practice Theories to be constructed, developed and allows them to be more patient specific. I believe it is necessary to create new theories to match what is affecting nursing and patient care today and in the future. Theories that can include technology and all the advancement in medicine.
