The emergence of theories provides a subject field the foundation and direction as the basis of its practice. As a head nurse designated at the Critical Care Unit, I’d like to highlight three nursing theoretical frameworks I am constantly utilizing in our department, which are, Dorothea Orem’s Self-Care Deficit theory, Jean Watson’s Philosophy and Science of Caring and Ida Jean Orlando’s Theory of Nursing Process Discipline.
Being in a diverse set-up where majority of our clients are on their death beds, if not, intubated with medical assistive devices and other related contraptions attached to them, patients with limited ROMs and in need of complete bed rest—the common denominator of the aforementioned is their inability to care for themselves.
