Some regard care only in a pathological sense. However, in nursing, emotional, transpersonal, and a true connectedness with the patients will advance their health. Since the concept of caring is difficult…
Nurses are constantly struggling with increased patients’ acuity, documentation that is becoming very detailed and time consuming, and increased demands from the management while trying to uphold professional and caring relationships with patients (Cara, 2003). What makes nursing a profession that is different from any other is the approach that allows nurses to preserve and practice the art of caring. Watson’s theory is essential in understanding that “…the traditional medical model can potentially reduce the human to body systems, or even further to individual cells or atoms, in order to cure a disease. The nursing model and medical model are complimentary to but different from one another and that both perspectives are valuable to the health of society (Ryan,…
Watson’s Philosophy and Theory of Transpersonal Caring focuses on how nurses take care of patients, and how better care can help promote health and wellness, prevent sickness, and restore health (_______). The theory, coincided with the nursing model, states that caring can be demonstrated and practiced by nurses. Also, it indicates that caring for patients promotes growth and that a caring environment accepts a person as he or she is, and looks to what he or she may become (________). Watson based this theory on seven assumptions: 1) Caring can be successfully exhibited and applied only interpersonally.…
Caring influence patients positively and, it is beneficial to all stakeholders to preserve, protect, promote, and sustain the caring practices, which is the core of professional nursing. Patients had improved self-esteem, quality of life, knowledge, coping mechanisms, decreased lengths of stay and health care costs when they perceived that caring was apparent. The fountain of nursing practice is caring which is vital in promoting favorable patient outcomes. The combination of caring with competence is essential to improving health care outcomes (Desmond et al.,…

Jean Watson’s definition of nursing is, “A human science of persons and human health-illness experiences that are mediated by professional, personal, scientific, aesthetic, and ethical human care transactions.” (Boore, McCance, McKenna, 1999). To go hand-in-hand with Watson’s definition of nursing, her definition of care is, “A value and an attitude that has to become a will, an intention, or a commitment that manifests itself in concrete acts.” (Boore, McCance, McKenna, 1999). Watson made human caring apart of her definition as nursing, and personally, that it what drew my attention to her as a theorist, because I firmly believe that a nurse cannot be a great nurse without having a caring attitude and the ability to show empathy to others.…
Caring is so crucial because without caring, what kind of nurse would that be? Vance describes caring behaviors as; behaviors evidenced shown while giving care to a patient (Teresa Vance). In the nursing profession, you must have an overwhelming amount of compassion and caring for your patients and their families. You must remember that you are not only caring for the patient’s physical health, but also their emotional well-being. This belief system lines up with Jean Watson’s Human Caring Theory. Watson believes the practice of caring is central to nursing; it is the unifying focus for practice. The major conceptual elements of the theory are carative factors, transpersonal caring relationship, and caring moment/caring occasion.…

There are many different approaches in developing a relationship with patients, one of which being holistic, patient-centered care. Holistic care is described as “all nursing practice that has healing the whole person as its goal” (American Holistic Nurses’ Association, 1998, Description of Holistic Nursing). A holistic approach allows the nurse to view the patient as a whole, as opposed to focusing in on one small aspect. By viewing the entire person, we are able to provide spiritual, medical, and any other type of care that may be necessary in aiding the recovery of our patients. “Holism involves studying and understanding the interrelationships of the bio-psycho-social-spiritual dimensions of the person, recognizing that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts,” (Dossey, 2010, p.14), which further emphasizes that by using a holistic nursing approach, we are able to take not only a patient’s physical well-being into consideration, but also the emotional, spiritual, and mental well-being of our…
Introduction Trying to find a theory that can be used and have been used to help with such great problem such as nurse shortage was a challenge. After studying and reading many of the theorist models, Jean Watson nursing model stood out the most. The nurse literature reveals when supporting nurse staffing, it can warrant a quality of care from the nurses for their patients (Douglas, K. 2011). This task for the hospital administrator all the way down to the nurse manager, has come a great challenge and difficult task to achieve.…
