Hispanics make up about sixteen percent of the population (Bastable, 2014). Most people erroneously classify this group under one umbrella . To teach people in the Hispanic community, it would be imperative to know the background of the group I am going to teach. By this I meant, are they all from Puerto Rico, Cuba, Mexico, etceteras. Even though all Hispanics are classified under one group, their customs varies from one country to another and to effectively teach and engage this group I would break the group up according to their country of origin as this would help avoid any stereotyping of any group. Example, a discussion on the many ways to prevent and treat diabetes will involve the modification of diet, and so one would have to know that the Mexican diet is different from the Cuban diet. My intention is to try and teach every nurse on that unit about Ventilator Associated Pneumonia (VAP). Knowing these nurses will be busy, my plan is to dedicate about 2 hours for my teaching project. My plan is to try and do my teaching at the nurses station and the breakroom. The environment will be informal as I understand the nurses will have to answer to call lights, beeping pumps, and most importantly, nurses with patients on the ventilator and critical drips will be in a hurry to get back to their patients.
