Formulating an Answerable Question about Pressure Ulcers
Pressure ulcers, otherwise known as decubiti are a nuisance to both patients and their healthcare providers. It affects the transition of care, the patient’s length of stay and it has an adverse impact on the cost of care. Caring for pressure ulcers is a costly care, which can put financial burden on a healthcare facility. These ulcers are preventable. They can be avoided with vigilance and proper care of patients. Patients need to be given the attention that is needed to afford efficient and effective care.
A pressure ulcer (PU), also referred to as a 'pressure injury ', 'pressure sore ', or 'bedsore ' is defined as an area of localized tissue damage that is caused by unrelieved pressure, friction or shearing forces on any part of the body. There has to be specificity in regards to what is being considered, such as, the type of patient, the condition affecting the patient, and the type of intervention necessary to alleviate the problem.
PICO Question: Does surgical debridement has a better outcome for the treatment of unstageable pressure ulcers in elderly or immobile patients than do autolytic debridement?
