The image of nursing explains how society views the profession of nursing. The profession has changed tremendously over the centuries, from being a profession only permitted to single, white Catholic women to becoming a diversified occupation for men and women of all race, culture, and religion. Time has redefined society’s outlook on nursing. Nurses have a crucial job in providing and enhancing the health care services to the public (Glerean, Hupli, Talman, & Haavisto, 2017). The image of nursing in 2017 is important as the population grows because nurses are dominating the health care field with their variety of work environments, multiple career opportunities, and specific professional requirements.

Nurses are not only situated in hospitals, they are working in schools, residential care facilities, offices of physicians, home healthcare services, correctional facilities, places of worship, air transportation, military bases, and courts of law. The old nursing image is over, nurses are now able to use their expertise outside of the hospital and long-term setting. According to Jaimet (2016), the goal for the health care future is to connect to nurses using a portable digital device, rather than patients waiting to seek help until they have a serious medical problem, patients can connect with a nurse when the problem begins. Jaiment (2016) is hoping that the use of nurse to patient technology will help eliminate hospital wait times, increase better outcomes for patients, and expand the profession of nursing. Those interested in becoming a nurse have the choice of completing two years at college and becoming a Registered Practical Nurse (RPN), completing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree and becoming a Registered Nurse (RN), or completing a Nurse Practitioner (NP) educational program after the completion of a Master or Post-Master of Nursing. Nurses are then able to specialize in a particular field of nursing, e.g., emergency nursing, rehabilitation nursing, and/or oncology nursing. The care from a NP has been seen as valuable as it improves access to unified care, while allowing physicians more commitment for patients with higher needs (Stahlke, Rawson, & Pituskin, 2017). The increased population in Canada leaves many Canadians without a family physician. NPs are able to provide primary health care in areas that have a shortage of physicians (Baxter et al., 2013). The amount of career opportunities available to nurses is endless.
