Problem Statement: The shortage of nurses is a significant workforce issue in the U.S and it is projected to have a nursing shortage between 300, 000 to 1 million by 2030 (as cited in Brunell & Ross, 2016). One of biggest influence on the rising demand of nurses is the increasing proportion of population who are 65 years or older (Brunell & Ross, 2016). The Wisconsin Hospital Association (2015) stated that the number of older adults will exceed the number of children younger than five years throughout the world by 2020. It also mentioned that the Japan and Germany are already in super aged category and by 2020 four other countries i.e. Greece, Finland, Spain, and Canada will enter this category, while the U.S. is expected to super aged by 2030. According to the AACN, (2015), in 2014 there were almost 69, 938 qualified applicants who were rejected from baccalaureate and graduate nursing programs due to the lack of faculty member, clinical sites, classroom space, clinical preceptors, and budget. The AACN (2015) also reported that there were 1, 236 faculty vacancies in 714 nursing schools of the U.S. within baccalaureate and/or graduate programs. Pinekenstein (2016) mentioned that the Institute of Medicine has a goal to increase the number of BSN graduate to 80% by 2020. There is a greater emphasis on supplying educated workforce, however it is difficult to increase the supply of the nurse workforce due to the existence of faculty shortage. The main reason of lack of faculty workforce is the salary differences in academic and clinical; lack of funding; and insufficient production of potential nurse educators from master’s and doctoral programs in nursing.
