Nursing Shortage The nursing shortage is one of the most prominent issue healthcare is facing. According to Bureau of Statistic, the projected increased of registered nurse employments by the year 2018 is estimated to grow more than five hundred thousand of new registered nurse positions and about an increase in size in workforce by 22 percent (Carol Huston, 2014, p. 71). Nursing shortage arises when organizations want more nursing personnel in the workforce in the current market than they can get. Supplies and demands to meet the numbers of populations are driving the shortage as well. The numbers of registered nurses’ are growing at a minimum rate; however, large numbers of nurses are anticipated to retire soon. Nursing shortage directly …show more content…
With the reduced staffing, hospital implement mandatory overtime policies to ensure registered nurses would be available to work when there is an increase in demand to care for patients. Also, due to limited staffing, workload increase and registered controlled over scheduling decreases. Job dissatisfaction includes long shifts, low autonomy, mandatory overtime, and being forced to work weekends, nights, and holidays. Additionally, nurses also experience workplace dissatisfaction when a lack of conformity between the personnel and organization values lead to work-related stress and turnover. Concurring with the nursing literature, evidence-based work environment highlights sense of contribution, autonomy of decision-making, communication, and collaboration with the organizations lead to job satisfaction and retention in the profession (Kotzer & Arellan, 2008, p. 1653). Foreign nurses that are well experienced and trained can contribute to the diversity of profession. Foreign nurses bring enthusiasm and positive attitudes to the professions. Moreover, due to growing cultural diversity in the country, foreign nurses can help aid for patient satisfaction especially to those foreign born citizen. Recruiting foreign nurses will supplement the need for nursing shortage.
