Nursing Scholarship Essay

In a dream, I sit at an old desk by an open window. A cool breeze ruffles all the papers strewn across the desk surface, accompanied by the triumphant shouts of playing children. From a back bedroom the lovely but imperfect melody of an instrument being practiced provides a soundtrack for my life, 10 years from now. Instinctively I understand that my ‘official’ career is in Critical Care nursing; though in the days of the dream, I only work part-time. I have a large family, violin students, and books to write. I’ve traveled the world and seen extraordinary, humbling things. Pleasant as the experience was, the vision also made me wonder if I’d like to just skip forward to the end-that is certainly something the eight, ten, or twelve year old version of myself would have done. Through this program, I hope to finish off all of my nursing program pre-requisites and then transfer to Oregon Health & Science University. There’s a nursing program through OHSU offered at Western Oregon University, not far from where I live, and I hope to get a Bachelor of Science there. After that, I hope to be employed as a nurse at a hospital, working in Critical Care, in one of the areas listed here: ‘According to "The Registered Nurse Population" study, 56.2% of all nurses work in a hospital setting, and critical care nurses work wherever critically ill patients are found — intensive care units, pediatric ICUs, neonatal ICUs, cardiac care units, cardiac catheter labs, telemetry units, progressive care units, emergency departments and recovery rooms.’(American Association of Critical-Care Nurses). Exactly which hospital and which of those wards I would be working in, I’m not sure yet-but I know that I want to end up helping people who have more than a little cough or sore
