Nursing Residency Program With the increase in life expectancy of the aging population and the emergence of complex diseases, patient safety and quality of care remains a priority across the health care settings; however, evidence reveals that nurses are not adequately prepared to meet the demands of clinical practice. According to Welding (2011) new nurses have difficulty performing practical skills and transitioning classroom knowledge into the new role. The purpose of this paper is to perform an organizational assessment of ECH Hospital, as well as, identify an area of improvement, develop a plan and implement one of the IOM recommendations. Finally, an evaluation of the implementation including interim goals will be discussed.

Among the various organizational structures, ECH Hospital employ a matrix structure. This structure is defined as an improvement in management’s outlook over a product or project within an organization and also employes multiple reporting lines and focuses on proper allocation of skills(Borkowski, 2016). The first step is the unfreezing stage (Borkowski, 2016). During this time nursing managers and leaders are educated on how the lack of a NRP affects patient outcomes, job satisfaction and the organization’s finances. All the information provided is supported by facility statistics and evidence-based literature. In the move stage, preceptors attend mandatory education and the implementation of a successful NRP curriculum takes place.
