Question 1
Is research used in your facility? Find out if there is a research committee at your facility. Is research an important component of clinical practice?
In today’s world, healthcare professionals and consumers rely on research-based interventions for health promotion and disease management. Professional nurses rely on research findings to carry out their practice decisions in specific patient situations. The hospital that I work for is a small county hospital located in a rural area and we do not have a research committee. Often research problems find the nurse rather than the other way. Frustrations with ineffective procedures and the search for a “better way “or the need to help a single patient may motivate the nurse to seek research based evidence to improve patient care thus research is an important component of clinical practice. As professional’s nurses we are accountable for the outcomes patients achieve and the effectiveness of interventions that are applied and recommended for patients thus research is an important component of clinical practice.

For example, at the facility where I work keeping beds in the recommended low position is one of the fall prevention interventions and the extent to which nurses assess the risk for falls in these patients upon admission has had a positive impact on patients outcomes as the number of falls have decreased drastically in the past several months. There is a team which implements evidence-based fall-prevention protocols, and sustains and develops such preventive interventions into measures of nursing care …show more content…

Determining the strength of a nursing research study is a critical process that enhances the implementation of evidence-based practice. Determining the strength of a nursing research study ensures that the empirical knowledge developed through nursing research is useful in improving nursing care, the system of healthcare delivery, and patient outcomes. Additionally, nurses should use research findings when making clinical decisions on the best practice to use in order to deliver healthcare services that ensure all the patients receive safe and quality care (Melnyk et al. 2014). Therefore, determining the strength of a nursing research study helps to ensure the evidence is credible (valid and reliable) and is appropriate if incorporated into clinical practice.…

1)Research is different from clinical problem solving in that research is a systematic process by which new knowledge is discovered through the gathering of data and information from different sources(Fain, 2013). In addition, research is also done to support knowledge that already exists based on a theory to build on or improve the information that already exists. This can be knowledge that is directly applied to our practice or knowledge that needs further validation before application (Fitzpatrick, 2016). On the other hand, clinical problem solving is utilizing current knowledge to improve patient health. One of the most popular tools used by nurses in clinical problem solving is the nursing process.…

This new knowledge can then be used to directly and indirectly influence the delivery of evidence based nursing to link up to date research to practice (Burns and Grove, 2009). Linking research to practice provides what is known as evidence based research (Burns and Grove, 2009). Research is a scientific process that it designed to validate and refine pre-existing knowledge, and thus generates new knowledge can directly, and indirectly, influence the delivery of nursing practice (Burns and Grove, 2009). The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC, 2015) code states that: All qualified nurses have a duty and responsibility to ensure their practice is in line with the best available evidence to ensure that the care given is safe and effective. A nurse's role to ensure they are providing is up to date evidence base care to ensure optimum care and improve health…

For evidence-base practice to be implemented there are many variables at play. First, the nurse leader needs to promote evidence-base practice by creating a positive culture, encouraging discussion at routine meetings, giving nurses the freedom to question how to do things differently, support staff in implementation by giving direction, and designating money in the budget and time for it. Plus, nurse leaders have the duty to verbalize the association of using evidence-base practice and achieving the organization’s mission with those throughout the organization (Huber,…

The healthcare system as a whole is a complex machine that I, as a future nurse practitioner, will have to navigate and carefully operate. It is a collage of several networks, including, consumers, providers, insurance companies, and the government; working together towards the ever elusive goal of cohesion. As a future nurse practitioner my role in this system is to understand the workings of this system and work within its confines to promote the best outcome for my patients. In addition, in order to be effective as a nurse practitioner, emphasis must also be placed on evidence based practice. Research is essential to healthcare and as a provider I must provide care based on best practice and evidence based practice.…

When I look for evidence to improve my practice, I complete searches on the Internet using keywords. The relevance and believability of data depend on if the research and non-research evidence have the best scientific evidence with experimental evidence from a patient and practitioner. Evidence-Based Questions 1.Who can I seek out to assist me in enhancing my evidence-based practice (EBP) knowledge and skills and serve as my EBP mentor? Mentorship in evidence-based practice should be bidirectional. The process requires a nurse to seek mentorship from various sources, given that there is nobody who can have entire knowledge about a given subject in nursing. Consequently, I believe that I need to seek assistance from the nurses who have experience in the facility I am working in while also referring to the existing information from scholarly work, including scholarly journals, especially those from the recent studies conducted in the specific field of my interest at a given time. In this case, I should use PICOT, search for…

Fain (2013), states that “evidence-based practice relies on evidence from research and refers to clinicians making an effort to integrate research findings into clinical thinking and decision making (p. 5). Fain also goes to state that we, as nurses, can improve the roles of nursing by asking questions such as “What is the best evidence for this practice?” or “What are the highest achievable outcomes for the patient, family, and nurse?” (p. 5). Where I currently work, I triage individuals that come in off the street to determine whether they need psychiatric admission or just outpatient referrals.…

According to LoBiondo-Wood and Haber (2014), the situation specific theories “are narrow in scope, explain a small aspect of phenomena and processes of interest to nurses, and are usually limited to specific populations or field of practice (p. 82). The research and practice are closely connected in the situation-specific theory. In addition, I think that it would be appropriate to apply a broader framework to this presented article such as the Promoting Action on Research Implementation in Health Services Framework (PARIHS). The theory of the PARIHS framework is that the success of evidence implementation depends on three necessary elements: evidence, context, and facilitation. Ullrich, Sahay, and Stetler (2014) stated that “successful implementation is most likely to occur when (a) scientific evidence is viewed as aligning with professional and patient beliefs, (b) healthcare context is receptive to implementation, including supportive leadership, culture and evaluation systems, and (c) mechanisms are in place to facilitate implementation” (p.…

Evidence based practice is the combination of current based evidence and clinical expertise and patient values to guide health care practices (LoBiondo-Wood & Haber 2014). The goal of evidence based practice is to integrate these different perspectives to provide high quality patient care reflecting the best interests, values, and needs of the patients we are caring for. The incorporation of evidence based practice has been rising and the prevalence of new information that we are learning from research is allowing us to provide more efficient care each day. The purpose of this discussion board is to explore a situation in my current workplace where evidence based practice has been applied. One of my co-workers decided to partake in an evidence…

As we know that there is a relationship between research and practice it is imperative that nurses know what research qualifies any method that they have to put into practice In order to individualize patients’ needs instead of generalize care. What makes research so credible is because experiments are used to conclude any theories that scientists put in study. Different experiments must be performed in order to achieve the best evidence of a theory. Therefore, it is important for nurses to update their knowledge by always informing themselves about any current new researches.…

First, nursing has always used research findings to support data collection, to suggest interventions and evaluate the quality and growth of patient care. This method is called research utilization (Spector, 2008). In research utilization, the different results from the studies are conveniently selected for the application in nursing practice. For evidence based research, the nurses will select the best evidence from the research, the results are analysed, synthesized and then integrated into practice (Spector, 2008, p.…
