Research and Evidence Based Practice
Research and evidence based practice (EBP) are terms that can be easily confused with one another. These two terms work conjointly to help nurses develop ways to provide patients’ with the highest quality of care. Research can be described as a planned event that leads to the detection of new information (Schmidt & Brown, 2015). It is a way to identify new knowledge and to confirm existing knowledge (Schmidt & Brown, 2015). Research is also conducted to help find answers to questions or an issue (Schmidt & Brown, 2015). Furthermore, research is conducted in hopes to explain or predict a particular outcome (Schmidt & Brown, 2015). However, within all definitions three components are included. These components are: Research based information, clinical expertise, and patient preference (Schmidt & Brown, 2015). Examining and applying research findings is included in the development of EBP (Schmidt & Brown, 2015). Reviewing research journals and documents while utilizing critical thinking skills is one way to participate in this process (Schmidt & Brown, 2015). At this point, nurses can implement the evidence to patient care thus utilizing their critical decision making skills (Schmidt & Brown, 2015). Utilizing the PICOT model may assist the nurse to develop EBP questions (Schmidt & Brown, 2015). To end, the selection of a research topic should be large in scope (Schmidt & Brown, 2015). Studies that produce powerful improvements in patient outcome should be chosen keeping in mind the rights of the patient (Schmidt & Brown, 2015). There is a lot of effort that goes into conducting research and EBP. It is important to select a topic of interest which will make it more feasible to finish the study (Schmidt & Brown, 2015).
