Nursing Reflective Essay

This semester has truly been a semester of both learning and reflection. I am extremely grateful to have completed my practicum in the Operating Room at Southern New Hampshire Medical Center. I believe that after 4 years of nursing school I have finally found what I want to be doing within the nursing field: being a circulating nurse in the operating room until I go back to school and get further education to teach future nurses. This semester has been full of ups and downs in relation to my practicum, however I would not change the experiences I have gained this semester for the world. At the beginning of the semester I had very broad and few objectives and goals because I want to get a feel for the operating room before I decided to make …show more content…
Sue was my main preceptor and I am so glad I was able to spend time with her in the operating room. She has been a nurse for over 35 years and this year will be entering into her 30th year of OR nursing, which seems incredible to me. She has inspired me with her wealth of knowledge and eagerness to teach me. Kelly offered to be my alternate preceptor and I cannot imagine my semester going as smoothly as it did without her being there and being a part of my learning experience. I hope to take what both have taught me and apply that to my own vision and style of being an operating room nurse. Continuing on this thought, I feel I have changed my practice of nursing because of the practicum. I feel I have learned to be more organized and concise when caring for my patients and have developed different ways to give report when bringing a patient from the pre-op area to the operating room and from the operating room to the post anesthesia care unit. I also have learned to go with the flow, which is something I have changed in my practice. As a person I like to have a very concrete plan of what is happening during the day and try to plan out my shift. However, I know with the operating room things can change in an instance and I feel I have learned to let things happen and go with the flow. I feel that my practice will always have changes to them based off of experiences and new

This case didn’t shock me when I read because I had the similar scenario witnessed in my clinic two years ago. I started my job at the clinic and was assigned to shadow “the best” LPN with 30 years of nursing experience. Before I start, I need to admit that I learned a lot from her. At first, I was impressed by her knowledge and confidence in her nursing job. Her interaction with patients, knowing them and their parents/relatives, and her easiness performing her duties were amazing example for me.…

This week at clinical I had a Gyn patient for two days and a new mom and baby on the second clinical day. My patient that had on Tuesday with the hysterectomy was a very quiet and kind lady who was recovering very well from her surgery. During and after her cares we were able to connect through learning about her family she grew up with, her family she had grown of her own and about her children and other interests of hers. It made me feel good being able to own the moment through connecting with my patient that also made collaborating and working as a team much easier throughout the day to complete the needed tasks. Another aspect of making the shift go very smoothly was working with Brenda, I enjoyed collaborating with her as she is fast-paced…

Provide a description of what happened/learning activity While on placement on ward 15B (Surgical) at Southport Hospital, I had one specific learning opportunity that I wanted to complete as part of my surgical nursing experience. This was to follow a patients’ journey through a surgical procedure. I was able to arrange this learning opportunity with my mentor and also through the consent of the patient and agreement with the surgeon and theatre team. This chose this learning opportunity so that I was able to experience and understand the basics of perioperative nursing within the three different areas of theatre; anaesthetics, surgery, and recovery. Also, the surgical nursing care given pre and post operation.…

Nursing practice can be achieved by a nurse achieving an ADN degree or a BSN degree as evidenced by the ability to pass the NCLEX and be able to perform the required skills of a nurse. Yet, the nursing profession has been wanting RNs for the past 4 decades to have baccalaureate-degrees and it continues to do research to justify the cost of educating the nursing population to have higher degrees which is believed to be beneficial to patient care. The high demand for nurses after World War II and the funding for hospitals throughout the country opened a demand for more nurses. Motivated by this increase in demand and the lack of supply, the inception of the ADN program at the community college level was proposed by Dr. Mildred Montag.…

Overall, the clinical experience really does make it all come together, and all of the things that you learn in theory make more sense in a clinical setting. The theory gives you the knowledge you need to prepare for those real-life situations, and Clinic helps you develop the confidence and technique. I realized that I was using the nursing process, thinking critically, and lab results were beginning to make sense. As students I need to advocate for my selves, gaining as many experiences as possible before I graduate and are on my own. Expose myself to as much as possible.…
