A similar cultural experience that I have experienced in my nursing practice is provided to augment the importance of cultural awareness. A Spanish speaking woman was admitted to my unit to rule out a stroke. By the time I had the privilege of caring for her she had been in the hospital for two days. I got bedside report, from the previous registered nurse, and was told that she did not speak any English and comprehended only simple English. During report, I couldn’t help but keep looking at this woman’s face, she was scared, confused, and frustrated. I asked if there were any family members involved, and who brought her to the emergency department. It was stated that family brought her to the emergency department and spoke English, but they …show more content…
Basically, most of the aspects included in the neuro assessment were documented as unable to assess. We were not doing this woman any justice by having her lie in the bed, and unable to assess her properly, understand her concerns, know if her symptoms were improving, or having the ability to educate her. After report, I knew there had to be a better way of providing care for her and started by calling different offices and professionals within my facility. I found out that the reason no one has been able to locate an interpreter telephone was because we had gotten rid of that service and got a new video remote interpreter service. I found out how to obtain the new device and followed the instructions to implement it to provide care for her. Although this process took quite awhile to initiate it was worth it when I entered the room with another person on an electronic device that my patient could see and understand. The patient had the biggest smile on her face, she was very grateful and could not stop thanking me. In the end I realized the importance of providing culturally competent care for our

In terms of patient experience assisting frontline nurses whilst my mother was in hospital after a major surgery the task which involved transferring her to another bed in the next ward over via a wheelchair. The nursing staff and I were mindful of avoiding injury to staff and myself as well as the patient at the same time watching my posture plus doing manual handling procedures and guidance from the nurses. I performed the maneuverer correctly as I was able to advise the nurses to lower the trolley (bed) to the wheelchair height then lift the headrest forward so my mother is sitting upright before carefully moving her body onto the wheelchair in a one motion move by holding one side of her shoulders then pulling her gently and carefully towards…

However, sceptics have questioned how the concept is sometimes interpreted, arguing that there is unclear logical and pragmatic examination of its value in professional development. Therefore, developing a reflective report is an undertaking that needs to be approached with caution, more so if individual reflection and critical thinking are to be rooted. The purpose of this reflective report is to reflect on the collaborative boat bus project performance and the experiences of working within a multidisciplinary group. The report will give consideration to the feedback we obtained from the client and from Adam Smith (tutor) and how we then applied this feedback to feed in the report writing. An iterative model, meaning learning through participating, somewhat adapted to the one in Bulman and Schultz (2013)’s ‘Reflective Practice in Nursing p232’, Gibbs (1988)’s reflective cycle explains the significance of the evaluation process, especially building on negative as well as positive feedback.…

My current nursing path is leading me down community nursing therefore the research article gave me an insight on areas to focus to assist my patients to remain in the homes. As a student nurse, I found the OASIS assessment difficult to understand and I can see where true compliance may be difficult. Also, the documentation is only as good as those doing the assessment. I would not think that any professional would assess a client as at risk for fall and then note that they did not do anything to combat this risk. With many factors, both positive and negative, contributing to the outcome of care in the home setting, I can see where it is hard to create a model of care that works for everyone, but assessment of those with are at increased risk for poor outcomes, is one step towards reducing the readmission rate for those in the high risk age group of 65 and over.…

Observing at Arkansas Children’s Hospital is a day that I will never forget. At Children’s I was placed in the Emergency Department where I got to see and encounter many different patients, including a home trachea patient with croup, patient with deep lacerations to the forehead, a downs patient with undiagnosed diabetes, etc. While in the emergency department I got to witness firsthand how the doctors, nurses, and respiratory therapist really work together, and that their primary focus is family-patient centered care. One patient that I really had the chance of getting to know was a little girl who came in with two deep lacerations to her forehead.…

The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council defines the enrolled nurse (EN) as, an associate to the registered nurse who demonstrates competence in the provision of patient-centred care as specified by the registering authority’s license to practice, educational preparation and context of care (Monash, 2013). As the enrolled nursing is on an on-going learning career, critical thinking, reflection and analysis are vital criteria that a nurse should concern during her duties and studies. Mainly these three points are significant to deliver a quality patient-centred care. Because some nurses that have been learnt these criteria are not applying in their clinical practice. Critical thinking helps ENs to make judgments related to client’s human…

Fortunately, in my twenty-two years of life I have developed ways to keep myself level headed and less stressed out when things get a little tough. Being a strong type A personality, like myself, I have found that I like to maintain a certain level of stress in order to operate. In my head, I need multiple things to be thinking about and doing in order to succeed. This has made it difficult to find things to bring my stress level down, because I feel like I can never completely relax and let go of responsibilities.…

The Community Nursing (3QQ3) course has been an eye opening journey for me in to the world of community nursing. At the start of the initial course doing the practice tools I was quite apprehensive and had no idea what to expect. It was hard in the early few weeks to see how this course would evolve. But, as I became oriented and more familiar with the community the bigger picture began to form. Indeed, the windshield survey was a great tool to assess our community.…
