The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate and describe reflection within healthcare. This assignment will include an illustration of why nurses need to use reflection; the next part will illustrate what reflection does for nurses and what skills are required to reflect. Also, included will describe the process of reflection, identifying different models and a chosen model of reflection. The following stage of this assignment will present a critical incident relating to consent, dignity, respect and communication using Gibbs (1988) reflective cycle. The final part will deliver a conclusion summarising all the main points described in this assignment.
Throughout this assignment patient confidentiality will be maintained. According to the Code: Professional standards of practice and behaviour for nurses and midwives it is stated that “as a nurse or midwife, you owe a duty of confidentiality to all those who are receiving care. Including making sure that they are informed about their care, and that information about them is shared appropriately" (Nursing & Midwifery Council [NMC], 2015) (p.6). Ultimately, every patient receiving care has a basic human right to ensure that their confidentiality is maintained. Therefore, the patient chosen for the critical incident in this assignment will be referred to as “Bill”.
