Nursing Professional Practice Report

At this point in my career, I am not currently employed, therefore, I will describe the last specific nursing professional practice I worked in. For the past four years, I have worked in the Women’s Health Clinic on two different Air Force base installations. On account of the military hiring civilians to fill positions, I worked for a contract company. As a result, the military was only concerned with my license being up to date, as well as, having a current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, up-to-date immunizations, and met the nursing continuing education (CE) requirements. The ANA provides a voice, as well as, represents the interest for the nation’s 3.4 million nurses (Nursingworld.org, 2016). In addition, the NCNA focuses on what is best for nurses, which practice in North Carolina. In fact, they were created in 1902 by a group of nurses, which during their pursuit of the Nursing Practice Act made North Carolina the first state to legalize the registration of nurses (Ncnurses.org, 2016). The mission of the NCNA is to serve “the changing needs of its members, addresses nursing issues, and advocates for the health and well-being of all people” (Ncnurses.org, 2016). Nurses have to demonstrate that they are qualified to practice in a clinical area of nursing at a predetermined level by passing a certification exam. Once they become certified, it validates that their abilities, skills, and experience are beyond what is required for a Registered Nurse (RN) license (Aacn.org, 2016). Unfortunately, I was unable to locate a certification for a Women’s Health Clinic RN, however, I was able to locate four core certifications available for RNs through the National Certification Corporation (NCC), which included: Inpatient Obstetric Nursing, Maternal Newborn Nursing, Low Risk Neonatal Nursing, and Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing (Nccwebsite.org, 2016). NCC’s listing of certification exams was more extensive for advanced practice nurses, therefore, if you are interested in acquiring your certification at the RN level, or after you have become and Advanced Practice Nurse (APN), then you should visit their website at http://www.aacn.org/dm/MainPages/CertificationHome.aspx for more
