This assignment reflects my assigned practicum experience at Broward Health Coral Springs; a conglomerate and a 200-bed community hospital located in South Florida which provides quality healthcare to the people in the surrounding communities and healthcare workers. This hospital has numerous specialties and trained specialist to cater to the needs of each client that the hospital serves. The mission and the vision of the hospital are aligned with ensuring that the care provided to the community is of the highest quality and comparative with other health services provider in the region. The area where my Capstone experience will be done is in the maternity unit, with Ms. Vila Miller, as the assigned preceptor.
This experience will enable me to gain a better understanding of the mother-baby relationship, lactation, and postpartum care, to appreciate the actual process of labor, and to understand the nurse’s role in providing a safe and therapeutic environment that is both joyous and uncomplicated for both the mother and her newborn. The first goal is to improve the quality of care for our clients by utilizing evidence-based practice. On the maternity unit, care is improved when evidence is linked to practice. This is evident in the current articles provided on different ways to improve the quality of care for both mom and baby. This includes articles on breastfeeding, safe sleeping positions for babies, post-partum care for the mothers, and also tools developed to identify post-partum depression. This ultimately improves the quality of care that is provided and the overall outcome of care that will leave a positive experience for the client. This goal reflects RN-BSN competency number
