Main Question Post
Assessment of the Progress in Practicum Cipriano and Murphy (2011) recognized that healthcare transformation included the adoption of health information technology in order to drive our quality of care. Precepting with the Director of Quality, one of my objectives was to analyze quality performance measurements and understand how data findings influenced nursing practice. So far, to be honest, I feel overwhelmed with all the quality metrics that one person oversees. There are numerous rules to learn, and the regulations may change each year. Knowing proper documentation requirements may make all the difference between compliant and non-compliant outcomes. I spent a whole day during one time sifting through restraint documentation and venous thromboembolism (VTE) documentation. McKimm and Swanwick (2009) explained that learning objectives are measurable behaviors that learners should demonstrate because of participating in the practicum experience. Prior to beginning my practicum experience, I discussed with my preceptor the objectives that I had. She did not feel that I would have any issues reaching my practicum objectives. We have already dealt with several conflict management situations. My goal is to build up the confidence to initiating those types of conversations myself without the preceptor prompting me or driving the discussion. I have also seen her use many forms of communication such as email, cellular phone, office phone, interpersonal meetings, phone conferences, paper format, verbal and nonverbal. I have been able to incorporate some of her communication styles to improve my leadership
