I clearly remember the day I found my father lying on the sidewalk as he suffered from a stroke. I was barely a teenager when my father became ill. My family spent countless hours in the hospital, nursing home, and various doctors ' offices trying to learn what had happened to this man who was our pillar of strength. I recall how the nurses became his greatest advocate and always voiced their concern for him. In those moments I realized I had found my calling in the field of nursing.…

The main reason I chose to pursue nursing was because of the money and health benefits. It eventually changed after I witnessed my father on his deathbed. My father had stage 4 lung cancer and before my father died, we all decided that it would be best if he stopped doing chemotherapy and radiation and go into hospice care. The internet has defined hospice as, “a home providing care for the sick, especially the terminally ill.” They had one job and it was to provide care and comfort for the patient and their family.…

Two years ago, I was writing a Statement of Purpose for my application to the Master of Public Administration (MPA) program with a concentration in Healthcare Administration, revealing my failures, and most significantly, that I felt I lost my passion and didn’t know where to start. I also conceded that I was relatively unaware of the field of public administration (PA). Little did I know, examining PA theories would enable me to connect the final dots in the big picture of my life, where I came from, who I’d come to be, what choices I’d made, the relationships I nurtured, and my dreams and goals for the future. Although confidence came slowly and awkwardly, I discovered my desire to contribute to the advancement of public health policies.…

Being a nurse is a difficult job, but the rewards for this can been recognized by the fact that nursing has been ranked as the most trusted profession for over a decade according to gallup polls. I understand that I have an immense amount of responsibility within this field, and I actively choose to honor this by working hard, implementing basic principles of decency within my professional and personal life, and learning from those who have more insight in nursing than I currently do, so that one day I can impart my knowledge onto younger prospective nurses, as well. I consider this educational journey to be more significant than a career choice, but rather a calling to channel my intrinsic values of compassion, dependability, and servitude in a career that saves lives daily.…

Nurses are the backbones of any clinic or hospital sites. They provide health care in the best of their ability to help their patients but also be there for them as a person. Compassion and tolerance is key to being a nurse. There is no point of caring for other human beings especially those who are ill, if you can not be CARING. Nurses are just as important as any physician, just because they didn't earn a PhD, nurses are still just as helpful as any doctor in the medical field.…

After I graduated last summer with a bachelor of science in anthropology I took a year off to work while I applied to nursing programs. To get myself some experience in the field I began volunteering in the Doernbecher Neonatal Care Clinic at the Oregon Health and Science University, where I helped the nurses by doing everything from soothing crying infants to folding laundry. I loved volunteering, but instead of reinforcing my goal to become a nurse I found that I was asking new questions and being faced with new problems I wanted to solve, and I began to realize that nursing would not be the best way to accomplish these new goals. There were so many happy moments, but there were also times I would arrive at the hospital to find that a baby I had held the week before had passed away, or realized that despite all of the hard work and seeming miracles the baby who had been born so premature would struggle with health problems for the rest of their life. Every year between 10-15% of infants born in the United States spend some time in a NICU, and I decided that what I really wanted to do was figure out why prenatal and neonatal health seemed to be such a problem and find ways to improve it.…
