I sat next to his hospital bedside for what seemed like endless hours. My little brother was battling partial remission cancer. During such a difficult time for my family, I met amazing individuals who consistently brought us strength and gave us compassion – his nurses. As a little girl, I was inspired. I wanted to be just like them when I grew older – to not only help save lives, but to give patients and their families hope and comfort. I believe there are few truly inspiring professions, and in my humble opinion, nursing is one of them. Working in conjunction with doctors and medical staff, nurses provide an extremely valuable service to society. Thanks to the nurses who cared for my brother, I have the necessary inspiration to plunge headfirst into my life’s passion.
Since discovering my passion for the healthcare field at an early age, I have volunteered in a breadth of medical programs to develop my understanding of nursing. With the expanding desire to understand the operational structure of a developed hospital, I volunteered for a summer internship with HealthCare Global Enterprises, Ltd., located in Bangalore, India. Interning for HCG Hospitals opened my eyes to how efficient logistic structures directly affect the capability to treat patients smoothly. I was able to make a difference in the lives of cancer patients by assisting children with any post-treatment therapies, ensuring timely intake of medicine, assisting with operations as needed at the medical center, and shadowing oncologists and nurse practitioners. This challenging experience taught me valuable organizational and leadership skills, and again reinforced my passion for patient
