During my time in Pakistan, I undertook a shadowing placement at a hospital accompanying physicians on their ward rounds. In that time, we met several patients with various illnesses such as Huntington’s disease, a hereditary neurodegenerative disease, and Tuberculosis, from which my uncle passed away 2 weeks prior. Speaking to patient’s families and a nurse to better understand the implications of their conditions, Huntington’s disease struck a chord with me. I learned that the cure was not known yet, however through research, our understanding of the disease and its treatment is developing. I worked as part of a team, safely transporting patients from their wards to assist them in playing ‘Boccia’, a precision-ball game similar to Bowls, played on a national level. I was able to speak to them and listen to their stories. Hence, giving me an insight into the sobering reality of their conditions and also, how the illnesses affected their families and the environment around them. I greatly enjoyed working in a team in a healthcare environment, as well as interacting with the patients’ resident there. Working as a Controller in a taxi office, I had the responsibility of logging and coordinating bookings with drivers quickly and efficiently, which required a high level of organisation. I was able to develop my interpersonal skills as I met people with differing beliefs and ideologies to my own, learning to appreciate their thoughts as well as respond to situations in a pragmatic manner. Similar to how a doctor must focus on the welfare of their patients and how best to treat them.

Undergoing a personal development which involved altering my lifestyle to ultimately, lose a total of 38kg in under a year, enabled me to become a more positive and progressive individual. This increased my self-confidence and I enjoyed the challenge. I have sought to maintain this by continuing with my diet and exercise routines. In addition, I enjoy challenging my mind outside of college. I recently started learning Arabic, with which consistent progress is being made and aspire to learn many more languages in the future.
