I was 10-years-old, and in fifth grade when my grandmother was diagnosed with tuberculosis and had a lung biopsy. I used to visit her in the hospital with my father every day. All the anatomy pictures on the hospital wall intrigued me. After a while, unlike most 10 year olds, I loved visiting the hospital. I watched the doctors and the nurses taking care of the patients, and this gave me my first insight into what I wanted to be when I grew up. At the age of sixteen I started volunteering for Shore Memorial Hospital. Volunteering gave me a better understanding of day to day patient care, working alongside of doctors and nurses gave me a better understanding of how truly diversity is caring for patients really is. Patient care is changing rapidly now, and no …show more content…
The more I studied, the more my desire for perusing a career in medicine grew. During my freshmen year in college, I started working for Atlantic Care Hospital as a patient companion, giving me more hands on time with the patients. During my junior and senior year, I worked as a Phlebotomist at Hahnemann University hospital. This job has brought me even closer to my goal by giving me increased responsibility, and a greater impact on patient care. Now, at the culmination of these experiences, I am confident in my ability to relate to patients with true compassion and empathy. I desire to be a physician assistant with the aspiration of someday playing a key role on a medical team. I would like to carry the same enthusiasm I have for going to physician assistant school to my work by working as a true advocate for the patients I serve. I have always been there for people that need someone to listen, a shoulder to cry on, or even when they need a hug. Beyond just providing the best patient care I possibly can, I would like to be there from the tiniest things to the major medical

With the Apocalypse finally upon us, it was a matter of minutes before my sorority sisters and I would take the stage. It was the night of the National Pan-Hellenic step show on my university’s campus, and this year’s theme was “The Apocalypse: Only the Strong Survive.” Any normal competitor would be reviewing the steps in their head, but after noticing my sweaty palms and rapid heart beat, I was distracted by my rising cortisol levels. Endocrine hormones were the topic of discussion that week in physiology lecture, and I knew I was in a situation where I had to “fight” instead of take “flight.”…

However, after nearly four years, I found myself wanting more. I realized the missing component from that job was that I didn 't feel satisfied with the work I was doing because I was not relating to the patients.…

I want to have a career in Nursing, I also want to further my education and have more than just a bachelor degree of nursing. In the Bureau of labor statics, most of the information about advance practice nurses such as a Nurse Anesthetist, Nurse Midwives, and Nurse Practitioners were familiar to me. For example, I knew if you want to be an advanced practice nurse you need to have at least a master’s degree in nursing. Also, I knew that because they are required to have more education they are paid more than a registered nurse, an advanced practice nurse median salary which is about “$102,670 per year” (“Nurse Anesthetists”).…

“The heart of healthcare”- a term I often heard during my years assisting nurses as a clinical assistant. A career as a nurse is one of the most demanding professions for they function as a caregiver, a teacher, a communicator, a patient advocate, a person of trust, and a friend to those in need. Nurses ensure their patients are comfortable, educate patients on their course of treatment, administer medications, report changes in the patient’s condition, and comfort someone during the last days of their life. Most importantly, nurses work together with other healthcare workers to ensure that patients receive proper treatment. .…

Sure it’s nice to realize that within five years you can graduate as a PA and earn 90,000 dollars a year, but what about the lives that make it possible for one to ascertain all these funds? A patient to me is not just a statistic, a rating needed for hospital reimbursements, or someone you misdiagnose to keep coming back for more expensive treatments. A patient is a soul in need of assistance and comfort, a person possibly in need of a shoulder to cry on. It may sound like I should be a nurse, but truly I want focus on a more medical aspect where I properly help a doctor diagnose a patient. Hopefully I do get to work hand in hand with nurses on the field, for hearing their perspective is part of what it is to practice medicine…

After having developed interests in science, math, and the wellbeing of others, I have finally narrowed my search to the field of nursing.…

For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated by the medical field. I do not mean to say I enjoy overdramatized, soap operas about doctors and their complicated affairs, I mean medical documentaries, surgery videos, and the ever-so-popular YouTube clip of someone snapping their Achilles tendon at a basketball game or draining a large cyst. I have always been intrigued by science and medicine, but I never really thought anything of it. The medical field seemed interesting, sure, but other than that, it just never seemed like the career for me. I had always been shy and was turned off by the idea of interacting with patients; but now, that is exactly what draws me to the nursing profession.…
