I am writing a synopsis for my observation day in the Emergency Department (E.D.). I was assigned to a soft-spoken intelligent nurse that had a giving and sweet disposition. We were assigned a total of five patients, of which four we introduced ourselves and assessed. It is not that the day was slow, my nurse was assigned to go to the front of the E.D. at 11:00 to work at the registration desk. The hospital has placed RN’s at the registration desk to obtain the initial assessment of patients to determine the priority and level of treatment needed. The first patient of the morning was a female that presented with diagnosis of swollen salivary glands and she thought she was having an allergic reaction to either the antibiotics or she was so …show more content…
As the nurse was documenting the patient’s vital signs, she made the comment under her breath that protocol for the E.D. when someone comes in for shortness of breath is to obtain an electrocardiogram (ECG), but she continued to say how the Nurse Practioner (N.P.) probably will get mad that she was going to go forward with performing an ECG on the patient even though she knew the patient was there for upper respiratory issues. I proceeded to get the ECG machine, performed the procedure and took the ECG reading to the N.P. where she was standing at the nurse’s station. My nurse said no, I was just notified of this patient as she honestly stated again how she was missing the name stickers and tried to print them and they would not print for her. The nurse sarcastically told her how to print and my nurse said she tried that so the other nurse sat down and printed the stickers. all the while, that nurse and another nurse stood by each other making comments questioning if my nurse had a clue of what she was doing was acting like she was lost. When all the while, one nurse is standing there gossiping, another nurse was repeatedly reminding my nurse about seeing the confused patient and a charge nurse talking to random people doing nothing important, my nurse is trying to obtain help to finish up the paperwork of the second patient so she could get into the third patient’s
