The doctor told us that he might have been alive if there was someone around that could do CPR. I felt bad that I didn’t know what CPR was and therefore, couldn’t do it to save my brother’s life. I felt like I failed my brother, and watching my mother cry broke my heart. I thought of other families and how they will feel when a loved one dies untimely. I realized I can make a difference in people’s lives and so decided to do it through health care as a nurse. My beliefs and values are Respect, Stewardship and Compassion. Respect is an unspoken way of communication which builds unshaken and strong relations between people. It is just treating everything and everyone including yourself with dignity. Stewardship is characterized by service, generosity, participation and thankfulness. Compassion to others is the highest form of humanity. It is acting on the basis of respect and the recognition that others, just like myself have the right to be happy and free from suffering. These values guides my philosophy and my daily decision making and incorporating them in my nursing career will help me provide excellent humanitarian service to the people I care for. It will guide me in showing love, compassion, and care and making myself a healing environment for my patients, while being respectful of their personal values and beliefs. According to Leininger 1987, “The goal of trans-cultural nursing involves more than simply being aware of different cultures. It involves planning nursing care based on knowledge that is culturally defined, classified and tested- and then used to provide care that is culturally congruent.” (Black, 277). I chose nursing as a profession because it is the only career that could give me the opportunity to give my time and my life in serving
