I have long anticipated completing my BSN. Twenty plus years ago I was accepted into the University of Washington nursing program, but was positioned as third on the waitlist. Unfortunately, I did not move off the waitlist to start in that BSN program.…

In terms of patient experience assisting frontline nurses whilst my mother was in hospital after a major surgery the task which involved transferring her to another bed in the next ward over via a wheelchair. The nursing staff and I were mindful of avoiding injury to staff and myself as well as the patient at the same time watching my posture plus doing manual handling procedures and guidance from the nurses. I performed the maneuverer correctly as I was able to advise the nurses to lower the trolley (bed) to the wheelchair height then lift the headrest forward so my mother is sitting upright before carefully moving her body onto the wheelchair in a one motion move by holding one side of her shoulders then pulling her gently and carefully towards…

I started my journey through writing this year a bundle of nerves and a stomach full of coffee. This is my first year taking an advanced English course, but I was determined to do well. There has been no sleeping in class or slacking off this year, I’m lucky enough to take a college course a year early and at a better price, and I’m not going to waste it. I’ve learned a lot this semester, including but not limited to: identifying how exactly the author’s purpose and audience determines effective writing, developing pieces of writing though a process of planning, revising, and drafting, compose an organized essay with clear points and main ideas, used appropriate tone and formality, critiqued writing, and finally how to grasp the MLA format. My writing has improved through the concepts I have learned this semester.…

Previous to taking this course, I used to be comfortable writing in only one style, and if I was forced to adopt another style I would usually have a poor outcome. Last but not least, I wanted to have a clear, working knowledge of the MLA style since it was my first time ever being exposed to it. I believe that I have successfully achieved these goals. Each assignment required us to write in a different style and conventions. For example,…

A life review is critical for a nurse to complete for an elderly person or patient. The life review allows the individual to reflect on the happier times and the challenging moments that occurred during their life. This permits the patient to reflect on their life experiences and to appraise the impact they shared with the world and others. Generally, people do not realize the considerable impact they have had on the world or on other people. In this life review paper I would like to discover additional information about my Grandma and the impact she has had on the world.…

In Chapter 1, Brown (2011) explains why she gave up her job as an English professor to become a nurse. Her reason for switching careers being that nursing is “…a job I love and hate” (p. 11). She explains that nursing was a much more meaningful career for her, and that it stressed her out in a “completely different and oddly more tolerable way” (p. 11). While I was reading this chapter I felt comforted by Theresa’s words, because it was something I could relate to on so many levels. I chose nursing because I have such an innate passion to care for others, but it has definitely come with its obstacles.…

Entering graduate school, I have personally had mixed thoughts on taking a writing course for my first semester. The increased demand for scholarly writing skills in the healthcare profession allows for improvement in many nursing positions. “Some individuals take to writing easily and with enjoyment”, but “for others the process is quite difficult” (Dexter, 2000). I am one to admit, for me, writing is not effortless. I feel that I have room for advancement, not only with APA formatting, but with writing skills, as a whole.…

During my tenure as a hospice nurse at MJHS, I worked as a per-diem nurse for Wanda Youdelman, our nursing home team manager, and covered multiple nursing home patients. I heard during a team meeting that our patient satisfaction scores in nursing homes had fallen significantly, and our management has requested Wanda to investigate and put together a plan to mitigate this issue. As a first step, Wanda discussed the issue with the team and requested each member of the Inter Disciplinary Team (IDT) to suggest improvements in the process of hospice care that will positively impact patient satisfaction among nursing home patients. In the following two weeks, Wanda was able to compile a list of potential root causes for the low patient satisfaction,…

The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council defines the enrolled nurse (EN) as, an associate to the registered nurse who demonstrates competence in the provision of patient-centred care as specified by the registering authority’s license to practice, educational preparation and context of care (Monash, 2013). As the enrolled nursing is on an on-going learning career, critical thinking, reflection and analysis are vital criteria that a nurse should concern during her duties and studies. Mainly these three points are significant to deliver a quality patient-centred care. Because some nurses that have been learnt these criteria are not applying in their clinical practice. Critical thinking helps ENs to make judgments related to client’s human…
