Informatics in nursing has provided a safer mechanism for health care providers to document in a much faster and accurate way. In 2004, President George W. Bush set a goal that the majority health data be in an electronic format by 2014, which included medical records that are shared by many institutions and other technologies for safer health care (As cited by Spencer, 2012). I will discuss the importance of health informatics, health information, and health information technology and how this information has helped me in my transition from Registered Nurse (RN) to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).

Sewell states that “information literacy, knowledge generation, and knowledge dissemination activities are integral parts of all nursing roles” (Sewell, 2016, 189). TMC library for example is a powerful tool to perform evidence-based nursing research. For example: CINAHL is an excellent source for nursing topics, Medline/PubMed is great for healthcare disciplines, Cochrane Library excellent for nursing students and research, etc. Therefore, I think that informatics should be implemented during the early stages of nursing in-order to save time writing documents and perhaps a more advanced form of informatics during the BSN …show more content…
For example, International Classification Diseases (ICDs); Digital Imaging and Communication in Medicine (DICOM); Current Procedural Terminology (CPT); International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF); Outcome and Assessment Information (OASIS); North American Nursing Diagnosis Association International (NANDA-I); Nursing Outcomes Classification (NOC); and Nursing Intervention Classification (NIC); which are the most commonly used and has helped health care workers to communicate with an specific kind of language or terminology.
