The invisibility of nursing is a phenomenon that describes how little people know about the value of nurses. Nursing image is a multidimensional concept that includes the public’s perception of nurses, nurses’ individual and collective image of the profession, nurses’ perception of the public’s image of nurses, and the image of nursing by the media (Rezaei-Adaryani, Salsali, & Mohammadi. 2012). Many people think that nurses are not very intelligent when compared to a doctor. Today, students are choosing a nursing career for ease of securing employment, even when they had dreams of other professions (Elibol, & Harmancı Seren. 2017). The use of data has brought forth a nursing informatics profession that has opened new avenues to patient care. Data can be shared by healthcare providers anywhere in the world. The sharing of data has made it necessary to develop a standardized terminology and standards for how information is shared. The development of Standardized Nursing Terminologies is expected to increase the visibility of nurses as well as generate the data required to show the impact of nursing care on patient outcomes (Tastan, Linch, Keenan, Stifter, McKinney, Fahey, Dunn Lopez, Yao, & Wilkie. 2014). Standards of practice are “authoritative statements of the duties that all registered nurses, regardless of role, population, or specialty, are expected to perform competently” (ANA, 2015, p. 51). The standards of practice and performance include a descriptive statement and competencies for both generalist and specialist practice. The NPD standards are in line with the ANA (2015) Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice with minor exceptions. Three ANA standards; communication, environmental health, and cultural congruence are integrated throughout the NPD standards (Brunt, 2017).
