Furthermore, a revision of the Honor Code will not only limit cheating and plagiarizing, but it will ultimately prepare students for their future, with the understanding that breaking rules will end in a negative consequence. Students will evidently grow out of this habit and regain morals that will improve their honesty. Ethics is the broad theme of ISLLC Standard 5. The activities related to this standard provided me with a means to reflect on my personal code of ethics, explore ethics from the perspective of a district official, and to hear others’ perspectives of ethics in the school organization. The first activity allowed me to interview Richard Stiverson, a school board member, regarding his code of ethics. The interview was insightful and did not veer far from what I consider to be ethical. The conflict regarding the utilization of the honor code can be seen throughout the school system, ranging from even elementary, to the college level. With students feeling increased pressure to succeed and little obligation to turn in their peers, honor codes have fallen out of step with values of the modern college student. The uprising conflict regarding the usage of honor codes being apart of school systems, from elementary schools to colleges. Some argue that honor codes are ineffective while others believe the contrary. The recognition of getting a high grade on a test using one’s knowledge is more delightful than knowing the answers are someone else’s. In the case study A Matter of Honor, Sheila Allison is an African American Newton High School senior who is popular and athletic. In addition, she is a good student and received a congressional appointment to a national military academy. Soon after she received the news, Sheila is accused of plagiarizing a book review in an honors English class. Regardless of her extenuating circumstance, her teacher Mrs. Durnitz believes Sheila should be responsible for violating the plagiarism policy. Applying Ethic of Care to Student Conduct Sanctioning It is often that a student affairs practitioner finds themselves at odds with the administrative aspects of their position and their innate desire to aid in a student’s development. This contention is often at play in the realm of student conduct, as the practitioner must enforce university policies while at the same try and create a place for learning and growth.
