As consumers of information, it is fair to say we are in some way informed if not experienced or seen the quality of foods in hospitals and similarly in nursing homes. Meals are often pre-packaged and lack variety, and juices and milks are served in small containers with a peel off lid in limited flavors. Nursing homes are institutions that care for the very frail, disabled and sick elders who often needs help with eating and drinking. Over time, as we get older our bodies become weak, we develop diseases and limitations that disrupts our quality of live. Simple pleasures like a enjoying a meal or the intake of our morning coffee becomes a struggle. Some residents often develop a condition known as dysphagia, which results in difficulty swallowing …show more content…
As a result residents with condition cannot swallow thin liquids like regular juice or water. Thus, to create a fix nursing homes had these instant thickeners that were stirred into coffee or water or juice to make it thick. The problem that they face with this was getting patients to actually drink it, because of its consistency and taste. These residents were felt their independence, freedom and enjoyment were compromised and it was. Eventually, they started consuming less and less and with this newer problem were on the horizon. These instant thickeners were distasteful, lack flavor and took the taste away, leaving residents unsatisfied and limited in their choices. Consequently, to care for their residents, one particular nursing home (Amsterdam Nursing Home) created an independent tray service with improved services and easy to open cups to attend to the needs of their residents and patients with dysphagia. The director of dining services at Amsterdam Nursing Home Howard Rosenberg, came across Kent Precision Food Group who specialized in the production of Thick-It.
