Their Only Choice: Daily Struggles of Living in a Nursing Home
You hear it all time older adults telling their children, “don’t you ever put me in a nursing home” because over the years, nursing homes have acquired bad reputations for the action of those employed there. Nursing homes should not be as dreadful as people make it seem. These should be places where the elderly are able to go and live out their final life moments in peace and serenity. Instead there are incidents all over the nation where you hear about a resident getting abused whether it be physically, emotionally, sexual, or financially. This is why this is a big issue and I think it would be a great topic to write about throughout the semester. I plan on putting in the time …show more content…
Also abuse and neglect that these elders encounter isn’t always happening in nursing homes; it can be with home health too. Home health is where the person of need still lives in their own house, and pays someone to come and check on them every day and help them with their everyday needs and activities. It is easier to get away with abuse and neglect when you are a home health nurse because most of the time it is just you and the person in need of care, where there is no one else to overhear the abuse or see it. Also, this is such a problem because 90% of people who are being abused refuse to report it out of fear they will get in trouble if their caregiver finds out. That fear makes it very hard to pin point who is getting abused. Those issues to me makes this topic very strong because there are so many issues within my topic that I could write about and ask questions …show more content…
People that work in nursing homes or people who think they may work in a nursing home in the future, will probably also be interested. I think the big companies that run the nursing homes will also be interesting in this issue, but I believe they will be more on the aspects of being my opponents rather than an allies. I believe that they will be my opponent because I will suggest a raise in pay for all of the companies’ workers which in turn would lower their
