During the past six (6) months Mrs. Lewis who was the head nurse on the medical surgical floor in the local community hospital has been noticing that all patients who have been admitted from the Shady Rest Nursing Home had severe injuries that were not connected with their admitting diagnosis. Which led her to believe the nursing home was abusing the patient and led her to investigate and contacted the Department of Welfare Bureau of Inspection, which immediately found proof of abuse. Pa made it very clear at the initial interview that she has no need for personal support at this time and her main goal is to get permanent housing with supportive service to help her live independently again. I have been working in a nursing home for a little over a year as a dietary aide and have witnessed many problems within the dietary department. The root cause to all of the problems in the dietary department is bad management from my former manager, Sara. Sara was the dietary manager whose job was to manage the kitchen staff, order food and supplies, and plan out meals and snacks for special events at the nursing home. Bad management existed in the kitchen because Sara gave overtime to her employees like it was candy. One of the pros of residents receiving long-term care as individuals with intellectual developmental disabilities is that this type of care is basically an alternative to care provided in a nursing home (Williams & Torrens, 2008). Elderly people have always held a special place in my heart, so I wanted to do my field work in a nearby nursing home that I had never visited. I set out to learn about the quality of life that elderly people had in the nursing home and what contributed to that quality, either good or bad. I called ahead to get permission to do this assignment and get access to various areas of the building.
