Specific purpose: I want to inform my audience about the history of nursing homes and what goes on in them.
Introduction A. Do you have a friend or family member in the nursing home? 1. According to www.cdc.gov, 1.4 million people are in nursing homes. a. You may just know one of those 1.4 million. b. If so, you may want to know what goes on in nursing homes, or what residents, the people that stay in the nursing home, do there. B. Today, I am going to tell you all about the history of nursing homes, and what happens at one. C. I work at a nursing home, so I will be able to give you some insight about the different things they do.

So many things occur inside of a nursing home in order to effectively keep it sustainable, and to ensure the patients are treated adequately.
A. There are several types of health care professionals that work in the facility.
1. Some types include RN’s, LPN’s, CNA’s, CNT’s, physical therapists, hospitality aides, social workers, etc.
a. Each worker has a specific role in ensuring the nursing home is operating effectively and that the residents are being treated as they should be.
B. Nurses make sure each resident is getting everything they need.
1. Some may need certain medications, while others may just need someone to talk to.
C. If a resident needs something and no one is in their room for them to tell, they have a “call light” they can push to let someone know to come to their room.
1. Part of my job includes answering call lights.
a. When a resident pushes their call light, they may just need simple things done for them.
b. They may need to be taken to the bathroom, pushed somewhere out of their room, the temperature adjusted, a snack, or they may even just want to chat with you for a while.
D. There are other workers there besides health care
