My Clinical Experience

Clinical Experience I choice to do my practicum in the OR at SHMC. I completed a total of 134 hours from August 29-September 22. I had a great experience and gained much confidence in myself from this clinical. Before coming in, I was worried about the clinical experience from what I have heard from those that work in the OR. I also had a lack of confidence in my nursing skills. However, I think that this clinical experience was great for me. There was much personal growth that occurred during this practicum rotation. It challenged me to come out of my comfort zone and to test my knowledge. I learned how to take charge and not be afraid to ask questions. I was surprised how easily everything clicked for me and how comfortable I felt in the …show more content…
Sterility lowers the chance of a patient developing an infection and maintains patient safety. During the practicum experience, I have learned the importance of keeping a sterile environment for the patient. There are many precautions that are put into place to keep sterility. During my experience, I was able to keep a safe and sterile environment. I was aware of my surroundings of the sterile field and made sure my back was never to it. I learned and was successful at approaching the sterile field and passing instruments. I did struggle for a bit at opening sterile supplies to the scrub techs and making sure I did not touch the supplies. However, with much practice I grew comfortable at performing this …show more content…
I think that both of these servant leadership characteristics work hand-in-hand and are essential in our nursing practice. In my opinion, non-verbal communication is more powerful than verbal communication. One can really sense what a person is feeling just by their body language and facial expressions compared to what they say. For example, someone might make a statement on a subject but their facial and body expressions say the opposite. As a nurse, I think that it is important to be aware of a patient’s non-verbal communication. It gives you a clue as to what a person is feeling at that time. In my practicum experience, patients have not voiced concern about the procedure or have been very optimistic about it to their friends and family. However, I have noticed that once we start rolling towards the OR, their facial expressions say something completely different than their verbal communication. For example, I have a patient that seemed to not show much interest in the surgery and was very nonchalant about a craniotomy. However, her non-verbal communication was saying that she was sacred and uncertain about the surgery. I recognized this and asked her how she was going. She then opened up and started sharing that she was worried about the outcome of the surgery. By offering a listening ear and providing reassurance, I noticed it helped her relax. I have also learned that by asking questions

Prince et al. (2005) previously surveyed fourth year medical students on the effect of transition from pre-clinical to clinical practice (during clinical clerkship programs) on their perceived workload, clinical knowledge/skills and learning. It was revealed that the students were uncertain as to how to behave and act, mainly because they were uncertain of what was expected of them. The students also reported a drastic increase in clinical workload, which reduced their study hours. Consequently, a majority of students felt they were moderately prepared with regard to applying their pre-clinical knowledge and skills (ibid).…

She seems to be very easy going [really? doesn’t she seem pretty tense and resentful?] about the operation she is getting and does not want to talk about it that much. The woman simply agrees with whatever the man says without putting up too much of a fight. Katelyn Baker 09-27-2014 Monday-Thursday 7:30-9:30 MRSA: Lori Popp’s Story I had the chance to listen to guest speaker Lori Popp talk about what happened to her after going through a bariatric operation and the complications that came with it. Her story really opened my eyes to what is happening in the world and health care settings. She taught me to be cautious because not every health care worker takes the proper precautions when working with their patients. This is how she acquired MRSA, because her surgeon did not follow proper protocol. Lori endured multiple antibiotic treatments, but more than anything she had to endure a terribly great number of surgeries; currently somewhere near 60 surgeries, to help control her MRSA infection because…

Hygiene and infection control is compulsory at all times. It is also highly important to work as a team with the other professionals to provide the best health care possible for the patient and to always keep the patient’s needs in mind. I realise that it would have been helpful for me to have researched more into the procedures being carried out using the internet or books so that I could have been more confident in myself and enabled myself to work more efficiently. After my moving and handling practicals it helped me to read through recommended books such as ‘The Handling of People’ so that I can make the right decisions when manual handling to protect the patient and also protect my back when doing…

Throughout my clinical rotations, I have dedicated myself to giving best shot at all the specialities, and at the same time trying to figure out a speciality that would align flawlessly with my personal and future goals. While this task seemed straightforward and uncomplicated, it was challenging to find a specialty that combined cerebral requirements of internal medicine and procedural skills of surgery, until my Anesthesiology rotation. Major factors that drew me to the specialty were the challenge of managing critically ill patients, the clinical application of pharmacology and physiology and the hands on nature of the speciality. During my third year, I had glimpse of the profession while doing my core rotations. My first month into clinical rotations, I was on-call for my internal medicine rotation.…
