Competency

The preceptorship rotation afforded me the opportunity to put into practice majority of the nursing skills and the various theories learned. Indeed, the whole experience laid down the course in achieving nursing competency. This was my last scheduled preceptorship, and I was lucky enough to have been given the opportunity to work with nurses that had full confidence in my ability. So, this gave me the fortuity to focus primarily on providing care, especially for the special needs of each patient that requires specialized nursing interventions. During this preceptorship, I was lucky enough to have been paired with a nurse who had plenty of experience and an equally great attitude. In spite of the patient workload, he took

Basic glucose testing and even providing perineal care to patients with chronic illness is not a simple task, but is made difficult by the constant pain, the severity, and the incertitude brought by their disease. And, for the purpose of providing these patients that much needed care, I needed to critically think while also relying on my understanding of the disease process. Additionally, this week’s preceptorship further enhanced my understanding of the theoretical knowledge and provided hands-on practical application of the nursing process that guided me in fulfilling my role as a caregiver. Thus, it proved especially important to have the guidance and tutelage of a seasoned nurse. Although, the challenges and the difficulties arise in my provision of care, I was fully confident that with my preceptor at my side, everything will be alright. Nursing is physically exhausting and emotionally draining, but at the end of each day I was able to accomplish the necessary nursing intervention each patient needed in that nine hour shift spent in that unit. Indeed, some might think little things will not matter, but I know that I have done the best patient care I could have possibly provided. Needless to say, I am thankful to have been given the opportunity to practice, gain knowledge, and further understand the nursing process through one competent

I aspire to gain professional experience in the field of nursing, because of personal experiences that have led me to select this career. My passion for care-taking within the nursing realm stems from a passion at young age to render aid and experiences very dear to my heart. My care-taking skills began while I was caring for children at church, as an assistant to both the Children’s and Youth Department. When a child would arrive ill, I would make sure that little contact was made with other children to contain the illness. I also made sure the child would wash their hands thoroughly before consuming meals and would take an additional precaution of washing down tables and toys to diminish the spread of germs.…

A lot of these skills I have begun working on as a registered nurse, and many skills I will acquire as my education as an AGACNP continues. Rosenthal & Guerrasio mentions skills such as obtaining histories and physicals, ordering tests that are necessary for patient diagnosis, and creating plans to care for patients (2010). Performing physical examinations is something I do on a regular basis as a registered nurse, but obtaining histories, ordering tests, and leading the plan of care are all skills that I will need to learn and practice in order to be a successful AGACNP in the intensive care unit. The scope and standards of practice additionally suggest that AGACNPs should be skilled in “initiating health promotion, collaborating and communicating with members of the healthcare team” (Bell, 2012, pg. 6). Many of these skills require communication, leadership, and knowledge.…

I've learned plenty throughout the past eight weeks. Looking back, the nursing process and cultural competence were the two concepts that I took the most away from. Learning the nursing process has taught me the importance of providing patient-centered care. Since then I have began to apply the steps of the nursing process while working as a nursing assistant and it has changed the quality of the care that I provide. I plan to bring what I've learned about the role and responsibilities of a nurse to my future clinical rotations.…

Teamwork and collaboration, good communication, and confidence are the three strengths I believe I demonstrated during this rotation. My clinical rotation as a student nurse did not only imply observing the providers, but also meant active participation on my part. Being engaged, enabled me to put into practice what I have learned in theory. The first day of my rotation, the nurse permitted me to augment the Pitocin dose by two units after 20 minutes. I thought that was exciting because I learned about the medication in the class and participated in administering it.…
