She believes it is of the utmost importance for a nursing student to be passionate about the service they will be providing to his or her community or humanity in general. Determination is also another key attribute that is needed as a nursing student according to Ashley. She claims there will be times whenever one has to overcome obstacles to reach his or her goals in nursing school or the nursing field, which requires determination and drive. Ashley also advises that it is important to be empathetic towards coworkers, patients, and patients’ families. One must step outside of his or herself and look at a situation from the position of the other person before acting or saying anything. Asking for help when needed is also crucial when it comes to being a great nurse. Ashley states it is better to ask for help when one is not aware of how to do something, or how something works than to make a mistake that could be considered malpractice. Ashley gave me wonderful advice to help me make it through nursing school and for when I start working in the field. Her words of wisdom about being passionate about what you do and not doing it for the money made a lasting impression on me. I do believe one should not work for a title or a 6 figure paycheck, but one should work because what they do brings them happiness and fulfillment. While interviewing Ashley, I also changed my perspective of nursing homes. Valley View Health Care Facility was the first nursing home I visited since my grandfather died on January 30, 2009. His death in a nursing home made me develop a negative view of nursing homes and the treatment of their residents. Once I saw how the residents were treated at Valley View Health Care Facility, it made me realize that nursing homes are not all depressing places to be, and the staff can and do provide great services to the residents. This change in my perspective will help me when I will partake in clinicals at a nursing home. However, my passion to become a nurse and take care of people has been revitalized. I feel more confident about making it through nursing school and furthering my degree than I have ever felt before.
