• RSV is the leading cause of lower respiratory tract infections, primarily in infants and young children. Conditions predisposing patients to severe forms of RSV are preterm birth, especially with immunocompromised conditions such as chronic lung disease of prematurity, congenital heart disease, and T-cell immunodeficiency, which prolongs the duration of viral replication. Pulmonary hypertension and cyanosis are associated with worse outcomes in infants with congenital heart disease.
