On physical exam Mae is BAR and has a BCS of 2.5/5 and her TPR is WNL. The rest of Mae’s physical exam has no abnormal findings. It is not able to be determined from abdominal palpable if Mae if pregnant and without further diagnostic testing, such as x-rays we cannot give the Adams an answer about if Mae if pregnant. The Adams elect to decline all further testing at this time and plan to monitor Mae at home, and will return for further testing in a few weeks.
Mrs. Adams is informed that feeding Mae as if she is pregnant can actually be harmful early in the pregnancy since it can cause Mae to gain excess weight which is not healthy. If Mae is indeed pregnant, her food will need to be increased around 5-6 weeks into the pregnancy, but for the time being it is best to keep feeding Mae the same as she has been fed. She should be fed 1.5 times maintaince at this time. Mrs. Adams is informed that she could switch the food that Mae eats to Science Diet® Puppy Healthy Development. This food will provide Mae with lower calcium content and less energy density. She should be fed around 5 cups a day of this
