The diagnosis of specific learning disorder and ADHD allowed B to become eligible for educational support services through her school district. B has an IEP, but still struggles with the symptoms of ADHD because she is not on medication. B’s mother has stated that she is having difficulties obtaining approval from medical for psychiatric referral. B’s mother is aware that B may benefit from medication, as well as psychotherapy.
B’s mother C, was also a previous client at Catholic Charities, she worked with one of the clinical supervisors while experiencing her separation from B’s father “E”. C is a 46 year-old, Mexican immigrant who works full-time at a factory, and is a devout catholic. She has two older daughters’ 17 year-old D and 20 year-old P. In addition, B’s ADHD diagnosis poses unique challenges for B. Since B is not currently taking medications that may aid with her ADHD symptoms, she is easily distracted and loses track of time. Consequently, her inability to focus creates some friction between C and B. C is frequently reminding B of her homework and chores.
