Comparative Analysis
There are many similarities and differences in the beliefs, values, and practices of my interviewee, S.M., and those listed for Muslim Americans in the “Cultural Factors that Affect Nursing Care” box. (Taylor, et al., 2015). Both the Puerto Rican culture and Muslim culture put a high value and importance for family. The man is also considered the head of the house in both cultures. Another similarity is that they both similar health preventive strategies including personal hygiene and dietary measures. Another similarity is that both value the importance of religion and God, even though they worship different Gods. Both cultures believe that illness and misfortune is a punishment from God. I am on Indian culture and we share many things in common with the Puerto Rican culture. One similar value we share is religion. Just like Puerto Ricans, Indians are very extremely religious and spiritual. Because I am Christian we both have similar religious practices, except that she is Catholic so some practices are bound to be different. We both believe that God is the healer and can cure anything and that illness or misfortune is a sign of God’s punishment. Indians usually have priest come to the hospital and pray over the sick, just like the Puerto Rican culture. Indians also wear religious bracelets and chains for protection. Another similarity is that both cultures extremely value our family. Just like the Puerto Rican culture, extended family, church members, and friends are also consider immediate family. Members of the family help each other in time need. In the Indian culture the man is considered the head of the house similar to that in the Puerto Rican culture. The man makes most of the decisions and does not really ask for the opinion of the women. Another similarity is that just like Puerto Ricans, Indians value and respect for the elders. I, myself, have been always taught from a very young age to respect your elders and take their advice into consideration. In my cultures, elders make most of the decisions because they are known to have lots of experience and wisdom. Indians are known for their herbs and spices around the world, so both cultures use herbs as a source of treatment. Indians just like Puerto Ricans have folk healers to heal people of their
