Sometimes I think patients feel physicians see them as dollar signs, the more patients they can see with as little time spent with them the more money they can make. The reality is that physicians are extremely pressed for time and with more patients entering the health system for care, the pressure in the physicians practice can be overwhelming. Any physician would rather have more face time with a patient then spend time on administrative work. I do not believe Physicians “ game the system”, I think that electronic health records systems has just made it easier for physicians to document appropriately. Unfortunately, the old paper encounter could not reflect all of the complexity behind what actually happens during a visit. The electronic health records system allows them to check a few boxes on the screen while it fills in the documentation for them. The returns that doctors receive from insurance companies are minuet compared to the bill that they had sent in from a visit. Doctors have a staff to pay, office supplies to buy/rent, medical malpractice insurance , which in its self a year can cost a doctor in the upwards of 34,000 dollars depending on your specialty and the state that they reside in, and utility bills. When you add all the expenses up, the profit that a doctor can actually make sometime does not turn out to be so great if they have their own practice to run. Furthermore, when they have spent 8 years of their lives dedicated to becoming a doctor. They deserve the pays they get and sometimes more. The work they do to help people stay healthy, live longer lives, and mend someone. Football players, hockey players and movie stars get paid millions to a year just for pure entertainment. What is wrong with that picture? We as a society do not see anything wrong with this, but we try to justify only paying someone who can crack a chest open and work on a heart and then put you back together, a person who saves lives day in and day out 365 days a year, treats sickness and heals a person 300,000 to 800,000 dollars a year depending on their specialty. This is where true fraud
